VAASA

VAASA (Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse) is a group of high school students who sign a contract in the fall vowing not to use or abuse tobacco, alcohol, marijuana or other drugs. If a VAASA member does not keep their commitment to VAASA, they must resign immediately. Throughout the year, VAASA students speak to 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders about the possible dangers and consequences of abusing drugs. They discuss why and how they are able to remain drug free. It is a great way for older, mature, experienced Rye students to interact with the younger population. Although in the past it was only open to varsity athletes, any student who can make this vow, regardless of their age or involvement, can join.

Supervisor: Tim Tolve, Middle School Health and Physical Education Teacher

Meetings: Periodically throughout the school year

Location of meetings: Room 155 in the Middle School
